Reasons To Get Out Of Bed On A Sunday Morning

Gigi at The Magpie's Fancy asked what was inspiring us today.

I was so inspired by the question ( and possibly by the fact that I was on my second latte) I decided to answer it here.
It was only 9:25am, so I thought I should let the day unfold.

8 hours later, here are my inspirations.

A day off, truly my first since last Sunday.  Thanksgiving doesn't count as a day of rest.

A small brown bag of paper white bulbs.

The faintest hint of Christmas via a few tall vases of long needle pine branches.

Finally having the time to sit down and peruse other's blogs.

The past hour I spent uncluttering the book shelves.

The realization that today my time is my own.

A chilly but sunny day that allowed me to take pictures of what is still or is freshly blooming in the garden.  Green nicotiana anybody?

The house smelling of turkey soup.  Icebox rolls rising in the warm kitchen almost ready for the oven.  A whiff of yeast when I raise the towel to take a peek.

3 neighbors dropping by for a visit.

The sky is dark and it's time to light some candles.

Claire de Lune

Coming into a warm house after a cold walk with the Lab.

And of course, my new header.

How about you?

P.S. who is dogjacket?

ReMix

We have arranged all the flowers, eaten all the turkey and painted all the door panels in the little hallway mystery.

It's way past our bedtime and the dog still needs a walk but we can't seem to stop.

Now we're mixing it up on the blog. Begin with a picture I snapped last December of a shop window in Georgetown. Add GG, photo shop and an inordinate amount of patience on her part, stir and you get a  new holiday header.

This looks so good I might not even have to write anymore , we can all just admire her artistry.

We Are Gathered Here Today...

As this is a national time of sharing gratitude I feel moved to give a very heartfelt thanks for the love of my family and friends. I usually might have climbed aboard my soapbox to point out some particular hypocritical or idiosyncratic elements of the holiday that have evolved from its origin to now, but I think we all sort of get it by now, right?

Last month on the auspicious day of 10-10-10, I was most honored to serve as the officiant for my younger sister's wedding. I was touched that they trusted my judgment to help create a ceremony that fit their character, held surprises, and made the already special day even more memorable for them. Their day ended up being practically perfect in every way. I have never seen my sister happier, glowing in fact. So many members of the family came together to make it work well and I was glad to have contributed my part.

The process of helping plan, organize, and give fresh perspectives for weddings is a type of creative consulting. I served as Man of Honor for one of my dearest friends several years ago, followed by being the Wedding Planner/ Stage Manager for two other dear friends, and offering up advice for rituals and unique twists for several other weddings. In a way, a wedding is really a type of theatrical event, one that focuses on the union of two co-stars, supported by a fancy dressed supporting cast, conducted/directed by an officiant, and with an audience of family and friends cheering them on. This metaphor was utilized for my sister's wedding, which took place on the outdoor Festival Stage in City Park, Iowa City -- but we had all the family members sit onstage instead of the audience seats, so they would be closer, more connected, and playing supporting roles.

Even though men of the cloth have a historical precedence of being gay, I wouldn't have served as officiant if Iowa had a ban on gay marriage. Fortunately though, in April of 2009 the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage, so my heart felt clear to participate. However, Iowa is still in a hotbed of controversy over the ruling and three Supreme Court Justices were ousted during the recent elections.

I feel very fortunate that my family accepts me for who I am, and that they were comfortable and confident to chose me for the role. It is truly a shame that religious dogma and ignorance can come between families, and that this whole controversy still rages on. The timing of my trip home was not lost on me, as the nation woke up to the reality of gay suicides, I was reminded of my own challenging teenage experiences. While I can agree it gets better, I feel the more appropriate sentiment is that I got stronger, bolstered by the support of gay mentors and friends. I am so grateful for the love and support of my family, and pray that in time more and more families will come to love, understand and accept all of God's children.

love is spoken here

My grandparent's home is the hub of our family.
I thought about this as I listened to my cousin explain to her daughter how we all fit together, connecting us with the people she is more familiar within her family. We may be scattered from coast to coast {and beyond} but it all comes back to this little brick home stock full of love.  Built by my grandpa and filled with treasures from his travels in the Air Force, paintings done by my grandma in every room, and chairs that have upper case names like Grandpa's Reading Chair and Grandma's Brown Chair, everywhere I turn there are memories; some old, and some in the making.  I love being there any day of the year but especially during holidays when there are yummy smells and family gathered there.

One of the things I love about the kitchen are the cupboards.  Packed with all the things needed to pull off a holiday.  And since I'm not a cook in the family, rather a dish washer, I have come to love the items and the way they all fit snugly back where they came from at the end of the day.

I'm easily drawn to pretty things, organizing, and pulling off a well planned day. Sometimes I think I can easily take for granted the other little things that matter even more.  The laughter, the way each person fills in their place that makes a family and the love that ties us all together.  Can't find that kind of greatness in a cupboard!

I've started my own Thanksgiving tradition over the last few years.  A nice long hike in the morning makes me feel less guilty about the gluttony later on.  And I think it is a great way to start out a day all about giving thanks since being outside is just one of the many things I'm thankful for.

The morning after...

Thanksgiving went off without a hitch and I'm so relieved.  Tired.  No, exhausted really.  But mostly relieved.  It is nice to be able to cook for your family and provide them with a warm and cozy environment to relax in.  And the best part was NOT having to drive home afterwards.  When the folks left and the dishes were done, we just plopped down on the couch in our tripophan-induced comas for the remainder of the evening.  B even made me a fire!!

I'm not going to lie to you and say that it was easy...it wasn't, and I definitely couldn't have done it without my mom (A.K.A. sous chef) by my side the whole time...but it was also a little fun and rewarding.  I would absolutely do it again.  Well...that is my response now.  Ask me again when I have a little one on my hip someday!  :)

And of course, in the craziness that was my day yesterday, I forgot to snap photos of the table setting and food prep.  Both B and my mom did a good job of capturing the insanity, but I will have to wait another day or two to get them off of their respective cameras.  I promise to be back with more details next week and even some fun updates to the living room (finally!!).  Things are moving along in our little casa and I'm excited to share them with all of you!  And now that we are nearing the holiday season, I will be setting up the tree and preparing the house with all of my festive decor!  Can't wait to show you all of that as well!

Hope you all had a happy turkey day!
