Market Monday: Deco MOD Walls

I don't believe at all in coincidences so when I met Ann last week I knew it was the perfect time to launch my idea for a series called Market Monday featuring talented people and their wares.

I was at a very dear friend's home last Thursday evening about two bites into my delicious Cafe Rio salad and ready to start a movie when the door bell rang.  It was some family stopping in with birthday wishes for her and when she unwrapped her lovely home made gift  I really hoped this girl had some kind of shop set up to sell her goods because I wanted one too!

Lucky for me, and for you, she has not one etsy shop, but two!
Deco MOD Walls was my first stop when I got home and jumped online to check her out and ideas immediately started forming of ways I could use this fun product.

{possibly the 'tween' room I've got in the mix? I could see these pretty flowers on her wall below her wall mounted flat screen.}

The second shop, Annzania, is dedicated to her folk art that I almost instantly fell in love with one of the prints she had called 'Nesting'.  I say she had a print because it is now on its way to my house and I can't wait!  If you're local and have ever gone to the Art Market in Sugarhouse you'll recognize her work.
Then I found her blog {I think I went a bit blog stalker}and she does family portraits too!  Her talent seems limitless.

And the good news for you?
She's offering my readers 20% off this week!!

Happy shopping and be sure to become a follower to hear about upcoming market Mondays and other fun things going on here.

Flower Power

As promised, cue drum roll, the birth of Venus, a spring awakening, a reminder of gentler seasons for our friends in hotter climates or just some pictures of flowers around our house.  And yours I hope.

Sunday was a sunny day here.  Perfect for leisurely placing flowers in vases and taking pictures in a contemplative state.  But oh no, we slept in late, had plans for brunch and shopping to do after.  So I offer you day and night.  In the morning I placed a branch of blooming quince in the living room and filled a stoneware vase with  some parrot tulips.  Vase courtesy of Goodwill.

Later last night, I popped a few more flowers in bottles and scattered them around.  A couple of Juliette garden roses in an old bottle dug up by GG on a dog walk on Roosevelt Island and a shot size bottle of Patron tequila rescued from a New Years party.

Oh and two more bottles, one a former Balsamic vinegar holder, the other an airplane empty, both holding ranunculus and chillin' with Buddha..

And finally, one last stem of ranunculus in the hallway.

Now I ask you, what's in your wallet?  I mean house?  Bet you own more vases than I do.

It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World

It's 6:25 on a Saturday night and I am still at work.  Mad busy here today, one might even say plain old mad.  Waiting for the driver to return so I can go home.  I have just grabbed a few stems of what's left out of the cooler and they lay wrapped and wilting also ready to go home.

Because, come Monday. we're all going to be showing what's in our houses.  Flower wise that is.  And if you think I might have an unfair advantage because I work at a shop, you would be wrong.  I don't choose, I humbly take the leftovers.  And I don't "design", trust me, I put them in any available vase, sometimes snatching out the old and plopping in the new without even changing the water.  Don't  try this at home!

Home again, home again.  Flowers plopped unceremoniously in pitcher.  Tomorrow is another day.  I'm off to drown myself in the bath.  Talk soon.

Titian Madonna and Child sells for record $16.9m

The oil on canvas painting had changed hands six times
A 450-year-old Madonna and Child work by Titian has sold for $16.9m (£10.7m) in New York, setting a new auction record for the Renaissance master.

A Sacra Conversazione: The Madonna and Child with Saints Luke and Catherine of Alexandria was sold at Sotheby's to a European telephone bidder.
It beat the previous Titian auction record of £7.5m ($11.9m) paid at Christie's in London in December 1991.
That was the price achieved for the artist's Venus and Adonis painting.

Titian's masterpiece fell short of its high estimate of $20m
A spokeswoman for Sotheby's said A Sacra Conversazione was "one of only a handful of multi-figured compositions by Titian that remain in private hands".
It was also, she added, "the most important to appear at auction in decades".
Sotheby's said the oil on canvas work - painted around 1560 - had changed hands only six times during its life.
Prior to recent exhibitions in London, Paris and Amsterdam, it had not been seen publicly for 30 years.
In 2008 the National Gallery in London and the National Galleries of Scotland launched a joint appeal to buy a pair of Titain paintings for £50m each.
Enough was eventually raised to buy one of the paintings, Diana and Actaeon, for the nation. Funds are currently being sought to secure its partner, Diana and Callisto.

'tangled up in blue'

My draft of a painting of Bob Dylan that I've wanted to try for awhile now.  Watercolor is still a daunting medium for me because it is so unpredictable.  Though that is the appeal of playing with it I suppose.  The scanned image here seems washed out, but the painting propped up next to me looks more vibrant and has some depth to the shadows.  I'll try to play that up in the next try.

I've had Boots of Spanish Leather playing to get me in the mood as I've been blending ultramarine, cobalt and payne's gray to find the perfect mix.  Such a beautifully haunting song, it'll forever remind me of a night it came on my ipod while I was way out to sea somewhere off the coast of Nicaragua.  I love those chance happenings when life has a soundtrack.

{lyrics can be found here and inspiration for my monochromatic water color here.}

Fun timing to try this painting since I was browsing the blogs as it dried and found this Paint Party going on over at Room Remix - the blog and decided to play along.  Go check it out here.

Cemetery Military Equipment

Near Kabul is a cemetery of military equipment, an echo of the war in Afghanistan. It is a pity that the pictures are not so much, but still look very interesting.

happy friday

My pretty amaryllis perched on my desk is starting to bloom and it is oh so pretty.  I don't know if  traditionally it was supposed to bloom closer to the holidays?  If so, I'm happy for the late bloomer because it is the not pretty kind of grey outside today and the translucent red is gorgeous spot of color.

Beauty in ordinary things

Before you picture a Japanese photographer named Moaan.About him saying that he could see beauty in ordinary things.
