John Wayne once owned this 4-bedroom, 4-bath house in Newport Beach’s Big Canyon. You’ll get a kick out of the address: 14 Rue Grand Ducal. Yep, “Ducal” means “pertaining to a duke”!
The 4,448-square foot house off the 4th tee of the private golf course in Big Canyon is on the market for $2,263,000.
The late actor’s name is in the title history, along with wife Pilar, according to Realtor Linda Stearns.
It’s no secret that The Duke called Orange County home (John Wayne Airport ring a bell?) but you might recall his Bayshore estate. It’s not clear that he spent a lot of time in the Big Canyon house.

However, the books, ”John Wayne: The Man behind the myth,” and “John Wayne, American,” have him playing all kinds of games, including poker, bridge, backgammon and Klabberjass, at the Big Canyon Country Club.

Stearns says he did some remodeling on the house, including an expansion of the master bedroom, installing dark hardwood floors, and designing a custom art piece with two stone American bald eagles.
“He put his own touches in it,” Stearns says.
The house had two other owners since then. The property last sold in 1998, for $895,000.
The 2-story “Versailles” style home includes a 2-story living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a marble fireplace, a newly remodeled kitchen, and a butler’s pantry that contains a ”secret” area, according to the listing.
Upstairs is a balcony and 2 bedroom suites with spa baths. Outside, the pool, spa and gazebo are surrounded by lush gardens, making the home “very private,” Stearns says.
