Deciding to either finish the basement by yourself, hire a professional later or have the home builder finish the basement for you before you move in is really a personal decision and usually finances is usually what controls your decision in the end.
What are the advantages of having the home builder finish your basement before you actually move in?
- The quality of construction and workmanship are the same throughout your whole home
- The cost can usually be wrapped into your mortgage loan
- The home warranty by the builder covers everything that was completed by builder (which is really nice advantage)
Keep in mind if you are a DIY (do-it yourself) type person, in the long run you may save money because you are actually doing the labor – but the headaches and tricks that home builders know to get your room square (especially in the bathrooms) is so worth the hassle. If you decide to go this route..be prepared to spend your life at the Home Improvement store every weekend it seems and prepare yourself for extra dusting..as it seems that getting rid of dust is a never ending process!
If money is a problem, and you need time to adjust and save for the basement to be finished, the next best option would be to have a professional come in and complete the basement for you later. Keep in mind, that everything will not match exactly as the main levels of your home, because every person does, drywall, ceiling texture, painting different. Everyone has different skill levels and techniques, but hopefully the end result is pleasing.
